I’ve been driving the BYD Song L DM-i 112 “Exceed” trim for about 1,800 km now. Here’s a summary of my impressions:

Pros

  1. EV Range & Efficiency
In city driving with air conditioning on, the EV mode achieves range close to the official figures. For example, I drove 100 km on a highway trip to my hometown starting at 98% charge, and returned home with 29 km indicated remaining. After resting in the car overnight, the car still showed 3 km range—basically confirming the range is slightly conservative. In HEV mode, fuel consumption is around 5.2 L/100 km, keeping operating costs low.
  2. Spacious Interior
As a mid-size SUV, legroom in both front and rear is ample. For passengers under 1.7 m (typical in southern China), rear knee and headroom still have 2–3 fists of clearance. Folding the rear seats creates a flat surface, allowing passengers to lie down comfortably.
  3. Practical Storage
Door pockets, lower dashboard compartments, and rear-side storage areas are well designed. Daily small-item storage is convenient and practical.
  4. Smart Driving Features
The NOA (Navigation on Autopilot) works well in moderate traffic, maintaining lane position, following vehicles, and automatically changing lanes, which helps reduce fatigue. Automatic parking and valet parking assist are user-friendly, though complex spaces may require manual intervention.
  5. Remote Air Conditioning
Using the BYD app, you can pre-cool the cabin a few minutes before getting in, making the experience much more comfortable than traditional ICE vehicles.
  6. Voice Recognition
The voice assistant is accurate, and even imperfect pronunciation is often correctly understood.
  7. Exterior Design
Personally, I like the front-end design; it looks clean and modern without being flashy.

Cons / Areas for Improvement

  1. Tire & Road Noise
On concrete roads, tire noise is noticeable compared to asphalt surfaces.
  2. Highway EV Range
At highway speeds around 120 km/h, the pure electric range drops to about 60% of the city figure. The range indicator can also show some deviation, possibly because “dynamic adjustment” is not enabled.
  3. Smart Driving Enhancements
    • When overtaking smaller vehicles on highways with smart driving enabled, the car feels a little too close to adjacent vehicles, which can be concerning.
    • Overtaking large vehicles is partially assisted, but fully automated evasive action would be better.
    • When other cars cut in closely during smart driving, braking feels slightly abrupt and could be smoother.
  4. Wireless Charging Area
The flat wireless charging pad on the center console is hard to read under bright light. A slight tilt could improve visibility of phone notifications.

Overall Verdict:
The Song L DM-i delivers value for its price. It meets expectations in range, space, comfort, and smart features. There are minor drawbacks in noise, highway EV efficiency, and some smart driving behaviors, but overall it’s a solid mid-size SUV. I’ll share more updates as I continue driving.
